Natasha Lee (IDEA Grad 2024) wins 3rd Place in CAPIC Rodeo 15 Student Illustration Contest with 'Future Facing Fear'

Congratulations to Natasha Lee (IDEA Grad 2024) for winning the Top 10 in the CAPIC Rodeo 15 student contest for Illustration with “Future Facing Fear” (shown above).

Many congratulations to Capilano University's IDEA School of Design students who continue to dominate the CAPIC student awards in illustration!

Check out this award-winning student illustration project!

Future Facing Fear was a funky attempt at a self portrait, with the goal to practice two-toned lighting on faces. (And apparently, the easiest way to set that up was to use an iPad and an IKEA light night as different light sources!) In this portrait, I started out with an orange and blue colour range, and a fast and loose painting style. Feeling that the pieces’ theme and approach were clashing, I later changed courses to a bright pink and green colour scheme and airbrushed away the paint strokes. This resulted in a more cohesive futuristic piece that had the honour to place 3rd!
