Some great final projects from IDES 142 Survey and Principles of Design II, a study of the global dialogue of design movements

The final project in the First Year Design Survey course is for students to design a shopping bag to represent a country, city or geographical location.

There was some extraordinary work created overall, showcasing both the students' design and illustration skills. Check out a few of the standout projects including ‘Istanbul’ (shown above) by Geraldine Yaris.

Shanene Lau (IDEA18)—Junior Designer at Cossette Communications

Shanene Lau’s practicum last year turned into an internship and then a job as a Junior Designer. In this Grad Spotlight, Shanene shares her advice to art school students regarding “paralyzing fears”, making decisions and concludes “Remember that you already have everything you need, in here *points to heart*”. Twice a year we invite the public to our Open Studio Day, for an overview of the entire program and to show what makes it distinctive from other schools. Plus, it’s a chance to see where the action happens, and meet both faculty and current students. Mark the date: Saturday, November 3rd, 1 – 4 p.m.

Alice Zeng—Junior Designer at If Communications

“Everything is still sunshine and rainbows” for Alice Zeng (IDEA18). She gets to work on a lot of different types of projects spanning a variety of mediums including illustration projects in conjunction with design and branding. "For someone who was torn for the longest time whether to go into design or illustration, being able to have a balance like that was essentially my dream" she says. Her advice to other students: “Hang in there, I promise the workload gets easier in the real world.” Catch up with Alice and her paper flower making skills!
