Natasha Lee (IDEA Grad 2024) wins 1st Place in CAPIC Rodeo 15 Student Illustration Contest with “Smiling Rose”

Congratulations to Natasha Lee (IDEA Grad 2024) for winning the Top 10 in the CAPIC Rodeo 15 student contest for Illustration with “Smiling Rose” (shown above).

Many congratulations to Capilano University's IDEA School of Design students who continue to dominate the CAPIC student awards in illustration!

Check out this award-winning student illustration project!

Smiling Rose was originally created as a birthday present for my grandmother. As she was once an artist herself, I wanted this piece to feel natural and painterly. To achieve that, I used a number of textured digital brushes to mimic the handmade quality of traditional art. In my portrait painting process, I always start by blocking out the structure of the face in a sketch layer before brining in a background colour and layering on skin tones. The rest goes by pretty quickly, and I like to check my work against the reference photo near the end to fix any proportion issues.
