“Smiling Rose was originally created as a birthday present for my grandmother. As she was once an artist herself, I wanted this piece to feel natural and painterly. To achieve that, I used a number of textured digital brushes to mimic the handmade quality of traditional art. In my portrait painting process, I always start by blocking out the structure of the face in a sketch layer before brining in a background colour and layering on skin tones. The rest goes by pretty quickly, and I like to check my work against the reference photo near the end to fix any proportion issues.”

CAPIC is the Canadian Association of Professional Image Creators, and RODEO student competition is open to photography and illustration students across Canada. Visual arts students from across the country compete for national exposure and an array of great prizes. The winning entries are also published on the CAPIC website and on social media.
