This project was a 3-part book cover redesign, I chose some of my favourite classics to use as a spin-off for these cover redesigns: Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan and Finding Nemo. While brainstorming for this project I re-watched the 3 movies to draw inspiration for colours, style, and overall visual aesthetics for the covers. I wanted them to have a more modern feel while still staying true to the original stories. I drew all the graphics and created all the layouts using Adobe Illustrator.

I did the majority of work on my portfolio in March and April before the cutoff. I attended a portfolio review session in early November. Even though I didn’t show any of my work, I found the session super-helpful to get an idea about what they were looking for and if this program was right for me.

“Beauty of Health” by Anna Oh (IDEA Grad 2024) as part of her application to IDEA School of Design

This fast-changing society has led people to choose easy access to fast food rather than healthy food. The vegetables and fruit are meant to look like flowers because flowers are typically known as symbols of beauty. I wanted to remind people of the health benefits of vegetables and fruits, by allowing them to be thought of in an exciting, positive way. This piece also speaks to themes of rebirth and renewal that I believe we can all achieve if we are willing to work to improve ourselves. I used watercolour and watercolour paper to give a natural feeling to the images.

— Joanne C. (IDEA Grad 2024)

Putting together a portfolio was a very daunting task at first, but after attending one of the portfolio reviews at an info session, I got a much better sense of what was working well or not.
