Tiffany Zhong (IDEA Grad 2024) wins the 2022 RGD Trailblazer Award with Paulo Coelho’s 'The Alchemist’ Book Cover Redesign

Congratulations to Tiffany Zhong (IDEA Grad 2024) for winning the 2022 RGD Student Trailblazer Award with Paulo Coelho’s “The Alchemist” Book Cover Redesign'.

This cover is a redesign for the international bestseller The Alchemist, an allegorical novel that delves into self-discovery. The challenge was creating a cover that represented the allegorical novel in a way that hinted at some elements in the story different from what has been done previously. In the past, covers featured red or yellow prominently and stayed rather monochrome. I went for more colour to give it a different shelf-appeal while still depicting the story within one image.

About Tiffany

As the first person in her family to attend university, for Tiffany, getting the chance to pursue something she is passionate about is a complete privilege. She's not taking a moment of design school for granted after meandering down paths in linguistics, law and strategic communications before finally finding her way back to her original dream of becoming a visual creative who creates functional, beautiful things.

About The RGD

Through the Association of Registered Graphic Designers (the RGD), Canadian designers exchange ideas, educate and inspire, set professional standards and build a strong, supportive community dedicated to advocating for the value of design.

Representing over 4,100 design professionals, including firm owners, freelancers, managers, educators and students, the RGD was created in 1996 by an Act of the Ontario Legislature (Bill Pr 56) and is the only graphic design association in North America to have this type of legislation.

The Certified RGD designation is a signal of quality and competence to the profession, public and government. Successful candidates have met a rigorous set of standards that includes documented levels of relevant, professional education and experience as well as competence in the areas of business, design principles, research, accessible design and ethics demonstrated through the successful completion of the RGD’s certification process.

Our vision is for a graphic design profession that is broadly valued for its contribution to life, commerce and society.
