Elizabeth Lin (IDEA Grad 2022) wins 2020 Applied Arts Student Award Design Other (Series) with 'Introdeuce' Squamish Vocabulary Game App

Congratulations to Elizabeth Lin (IDEA Grad 2022) for winning the 2020 Applied Arts Student Award Design Other (Series) with 'Introdeuce' Squamish Vocabulary Game App.

“With the need for revitalization of the Squamish language, there was an opportunity to make learning vocabulary interactive, hands-on, and appealing to students ages 8-12. Introdeuce gamifies the acquisition of vocabulary with matching cards that can be enhanced with an accompanying classroom app to deepen understanding of Squamish cultural traditions.” writes Elizabeth.

Project Details:

There are over 60 Indigenous languages in Canada. According to UNESCO, three-quarters of these languages are endangered while the rest are vulnerable. With this project, we decided to focus on the Squamish language.

Introdeuce is a Squamish card game designed to make learning vocabulary interactive, hands-on, and appealing to students ages 8–12. With this in mind, we created a set of tools to make language learning less daunting.

The illustrated cards were created for students to use as a memory card game or as flashcards in order to familiarize themselves with the vocabulary. The app then enhances the learning through an AR scanner by providing users with pronunciations, facts, and fun animations.

Knowing our target audience, the products were designed with approachability and ease of use in mind. The illustration style uses a mixture of realism and stylization to appease to the audience with an emphasis on simplified shapes and bright colours. These chosen welcoming design of rounded edges, bright energetic colours, and legibility ensured students had an experience where learning was not only easy, but fun.
