Second Year Students (IDEA Grad 2024) Design Some Very Creative Annual Reports in Design Studio I with Instructor, Vida Jurcic

In Project 1 of IDES 243 — Design Studio I, taught by Vida Jurcic, students design the format and concept for a multi-page report, including a cover page, back page, and three spreads for the report. They also write a brief for their project and apply their design to a microsite.

The project objective was to create an annual report, or community report for a company or organization. The students chose their own, and the resulting work was an interesting spectrum of styles and creative layouts.

As an avid fan of Nintendo, I decided to choose them to design for my Annual Report. The overall design concept of this booklet is a throwback to the older generation of Nintendo consoles while also merging their modern branding.

Upon first glance, you will notice that the cover is in reference to Nintendo’s vintage game cartridge (specifically the NES game cartridge) and you will also see the theme of connecting circuit boards. The purpose of this is to instantly bring the audience back in time to Nintendo’s origins while also tying in the concept of Nintendo’s modern branding.

In terms of colour, the contrasting colour palette of primaries and dark grey purples reflect the book’s playful and flashy design to help draw attention. And lastly, the typeface, DIN OT, was chosen in inspiration from vintage Nintendo game poster designs and illustrations.

Overall with this solution, the design will communicate a clear representation of Nintendo’s financial data and statistics in an exciting and fun presentation.

Background

Every organization that interacts with the public in some way (which is most of them) is accountable to the community. This accountability is manifested through a document of some sort for the public to see how the organization is doing fiscally as well as what they are doing. There are various interest groups that benefit from this knowledge depending on what the data is. This document may be an annual report or community report. In the case of a charity or foundation, there is often a document that is called a “Case for Support”, and this outlines the needs of the foundation, what it does for the community, and how you as a donor can support that.

This course introduces students to the fields of communication design, information design, and advertising, and to the role of design in business and marketing. Students understand the design process by analyzing design problems, working through creative briefs, creating appropriate design solutions, and developing rationales. Instruction in design-related software supports the course.
