Bloc is a digital wallet powered by blockchain technology, and is meant for use by undocumented immigrants to budget, save and make payments from any location providing quick access to humanitarian financial aid and peer-to-peer transactions. With a recommended use of 2 years, Bloc’s mission is to provide financial tools for everyone to participate in the world’s economy. To make the app user-friendly special attention was given to branding, language, trust-building and the accessibility features.

Annika, Rocio, and I were briefed to create and materialize a social enterprise project. As a team of branding, illustration, and user experience majors, we were free to take on the challenges of an in-depth design solution addressing a problem close to our hearts.

Our original project consisted of a fleshed-out brand, stationary applications, an illustrated advertising campaign, and the Bloc app itself. I narrowed it down to the app-only when applying so the project would fit into more judging categories.

We’re all pretty happy (and surprised!) we won an award for our hard work and collaborative effort. It was worth going through application-process hell to fix Bloc up.

Working in a team was really great. It was nice to be able to play off of everyone’s different strengths to create something we wouldn’t have if we had just been working on our own.

Designing the logo was a huge challenge. We went through various different names and went through around 3 or 4 rounds of revisions and iterations. While it was sometimes disheartening I think it had a huge impact on the quality of the work. Overall, this project really taught me the value of working with numerous people and who everyone’s perspective can add to the finished product.

Also, Annika and Coralie are both incredibly talented and hardworking so it was a treat to work with both of them.
