Congratulations to Alina Sandu (IDEA Grad 2022) for winning Top 10 in the CAPIC Rodeo 13 student contest for Illustration with ‘Fake Sephora’ illustrated social media ad (shown above).

Check out this award-winning student illustration project!

The brief was to illustrate a social media ad introducing Sephora’s fictional line of all organic plant-based cosmetics.

CAPIC (The Canadian Association of Professional Image Creators) holds an annual nationwide student contest in illustration and photography, titled Rodeo. This was the thirteenth year of the contest, but far from unlucky for Bachelor of Design students: First Place went to Megan Barry (IDEA Grad 2023), Second Place went to Janelle Momotani (IDEA Grad 2022), and Third Place went to Jamie Kusack (IDEA Grad 2023).

In addition, no fewer than seven IDEA students placed among the Top Ten: Alina Sandu (IDEA Grad 2022), Jason Low (IDEA Grad 2023), Janelle Momotani (as above), Joyce Chan (IDEA Grad 2023), Raha Namdari (IDEA Grad 2023), Alison Johnstone (IDEA Grad 2021), Aleksandar Jones (IDEA Grad 2023).

A clean sweep in the Illustration category!

Process sketch by Alina Sandu (IDEA Grad 2022)The idea behind this illustration was to depict the fictional line’s unique selling point as a visual metaphor. Though I went through different depictions in the thumbnail stage, I ultimately settled on a mix of all three. I settled on this final composition because it would survive being cropped. As well, an important factor is to keep true to Sephora’s brand personality to some extent. My impression of Sephora was bright warm colours and a stylized look, so I decided to make an art nouveau-inspired illustration with the same bright warm colours.
