CapFest Mural Dedication

CapFest Mural Dedication

Threat of rain proved no match for the high spirits of CapFest on Saturday, September 22nd. At 2:30 p.m. President Paul Dangerfield stood outside the Arbutus Building and thanked the thirteen artists who’ve transformed the campus with mural designs this month. Directly behind Paul was the mural completed by third-year Bachelor of Design students Ata Ojani, Brynn Staples, Emily Huynh, and Courtney Lamb. This quartet’s collaboration elegantly suggests connecting (as in the dots) in an abstracted, collage-like composition.

Also of proud note: Cristian Fowlie’s (Grad 2015) tableau of portraits in bright primaries along the west side of Birch Building; Tierney Milne’s (Grad 2015) equally eye-catching patterned geometrics along the north and west walls of Willow Building; and Drew Young’s (Grad 2011) digitalized floral burst on the west wall of Bosa Building.

These current IDEA students and alumni applied to the university’s open call for mural proposals back in June. It’s wonderful to have their work and that of six other talents grace our North Vancouver campus. In addition, illustrator and former IDEA instructor Ben Tour has just been announced as the mural artist for CapU’s Sechelt campus.

Special thanks to David Vertesi and Andrea Curtis of the Vancouver Mural Festival for managing this entire project.
