VIVAY LI
"I'm very honoured that one of my illustrations, 'Mount Brutal', was selected for this year's Applied Arts calendar. The illustration’s namesake was inspired by the Brutalist architectural movement. Key characteristics of Brutalism include raw concrete, monolithic proportions, and blocky shapes."
Vivay will graduate in 2018 from the Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication. The above image, Mount Brutal, was produced for a school project. After working as a graphic designer, Vivay returned to Capilano University to pursue illustration and concept art for the video game industry.

NADA HAYEK
Nada will graduate in 2020 from the Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication. The above image, Picasso Paints Iggy Pop, was produced for a school project. Nada is interested in everything that allows her to be visually creative, and plans on graduating with a concentration in illustration.

SHU CHEN LI
Shu Chen graduated in 2014 from the IDEA diploma program (now the Bachelor of Design). The above image, Greed, was a personal project. Shu Chen likes creating artwork that bridges across cultures. She currently works as an illustrator in the gaming industry.

MARIA CENTOLA
Maria graduated in 2016 from the IDEA diploma program (now the Bachelor of Design). The above image, Seeing Dollar Signs, was produced for a student newspaper, the Capilano Courier. Maria is an illustrator-designer hybrid who believes in building community.
'Seeing Dollar Signs' was a piece created for Capilano University’s on-campus newspaper The Capilano Courier. It was in response to the article which broke down the reasons why corporations act unethically. Naturally, the topic lent itself to the monopoly banker — an icon for corporate corruption — so I depicted Mr. Monopoly in a dynamic pose as if he were running away with the money. This emphasizes the main point in the article, that most companies will choose money over ethics. Special thanks to Cristian Fowlie for being the art director on this piece and to IDEA School of Design and Applied Arts for publishing the piece.

ALEX THOMPSON
Alex will graduate in 2018 from the Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication. The above image, Lac Du Bois, was produced for a school project. Alex is focusing on illustration, but also loves branding and long hikes in the woods with her dog, Roo.
"The Lac du Bois Grasslands Protected Area in Kamloops is one of my favourite places to explore. This playful piece showcases the wildlife that live there, including rattle snakes, California bighorn sheep, and cougars."

TIERNEY MILNE
Tierney graduated in 2015 from the IDEA diploma program (now the Bachelor of Design). The above image, Green Thumb, was produced for a school project on urban green technology. Originally from Montreal, Tierney now works as a freelance muralist, designer and stop-motion animator in Vancouver.
The piece “Green Thumb” was an illustrative look at the interplay between green technologies, active environmentalism and ecological protection in the future. To emphasize how interconnected these elements are, a complex mosaic was created that allows you to enjoy the piece as individual units or, if viewed from afar, the profile of a bird.

BRYNN STAPLES
Brynn will graduate in 2020 from the Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication. The above image, Beach Day, was produced for a school project. Brynn particularly enjoys brainstorming and working digitally. She is considering pursuing either branding or interactive design as her 3rd year concentration.
“Beach Day is based on an image taken on a family trip to Hawaii. It was inspired by Expressionist landscape painting and the colours of the island, and created as part of an acrylic illustration project for Jeff Burgess.”

Riley O’Dell will graduate in 2019 from the Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication. The above image, Port of Vancouver, was produced for a school project. Riley is enrolled in the illustration concentration but also enjoys branding. He is aiming for a career as a freelance illustrator.

SHAY KLASSEN
Shay will graduate in 2018 from the Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication. The above image, Acrocats, was produced for a school project. Shay is completing her degree in the illustration concentration and plans to pursue a career in character design and background development in animation.
“This was a spread I produced in 3rd year for my children's book "The Acrocats". The story follows two hyper cats who insist on performing a noisy circus every night. I wanted to make a children's book specifically for cat loving families who understand the quirks of owning a cat.”

KSENIA KOZHEVNIKOVA
Ksenia graduated in 2014 from the IDEA diploma program (now the Bachelor of Design). The above image, Snake Princess, was produced for a school project. Ksenia is an illustrator and concept artist in Vancouver. She works for animation studios and does freelance work.
“This illustration is part of personal project dedicated to Russian folklore. It depicts Snake Princess, a character from Russian folk tale called The Magic Ring. In this moment of the story she is about to be consumed by the fire that was started by her enemies. In the sparks of the fire we can see the ghosts of them about to attack her.”

Aaron graduated in 2014 from the IDEA diploma program (now the Bachelor of Design). The above image, Heights, is from a personal graphic novel project set in the fictional city of Fleetwood, BC. Aaron is a digital illustrator who uses Photoshop to create environments, characters and stories.
